A director wants to make a documentary about Rìgas Feràios and the liberation movements of pre-revolutionary Greece on the occasion of the bicentenary of the Greek Revolution. Following in the footsteps of Rìgas in the Ottoman world and in the Europe of the Enlightenment, after crossing Moldavia, Wallachia and Vienna, the director will find himself in Trieste, where he will meet the descendants of the large Greek community. His research will lead him to the community cemetery, to the school, to the church, to the merchants’ palaces. While our director is in the city, a group of Greek ghosts from the past and from history leave the cemetery and return to the city to visit unfinished places, characters and situations in the past.
Are these characters figments of the director’s imagination or are they “real” ghosts crossing his path?
These are events and episodes of the past which are nothing more than notes written in the margins of official history books.
Will our director be able to finish his film? What will be the fate of all these characters?
What do the European movements for liberation and for the search for democracy and independence teach us?
And above all, what do our Western societies teach us today?
