There’s the Christmas we all know, the reassuring one, with the tree and the nativity scene, and then there’s Petra and Jure’s Christmas, far from any possible form of warmth, sentimental, spiritual, meteorological. The two brothers live below zero, they’re used to it, but the freezing temperature of the village and its few inhabitants is starting to pose a problem: is there an escape route for people like them? Is there a future for a young, shabby couple of mountain handymen? Money. They need money. And the providential disappearance of their dog Marlowe, with the associated guarantee of a “generous reward,” seems more promising than many everyday expedients. Legitimate and less legitimate… After Zoran, my idiot nephew, Matteo Oleotto continues to grapple with the placid and bizarre colors of the province and constructs a tale as white as snow and as black as the news stories: Ultimo schiaffo. An (almost) Christmassy score where comedy and tragedy coexist and where every single character becomes part of a disastrous domino effect.
