The story is set between the two world wars and follows Marina, a young woman eager to escape a painful family past, who finds refuge in studying Greek literature, becoming one of the first women to earn a doctorate. Her life changes radically when, after her mother’s death, she falls in love with Yannis, a Greek captain and owner of the ship “Chimera”, whom she meets in the port of Trieste. She follows him to Greece and uses her mother’s inheritance to finance her husband’s shipping business, who buys a new ship and names it “Marina”. But the idyllic dream soon shatters: with Yannis’ departure to save his failing business, Marina is left alone with a child and allows herself to be seduced by Minas, her husband’s cultured younger brother. The result is a love triangle fraught with passion and destruction, taking us back to the archetypes of classical Greek tragedies.
