Who was Angelo Cecchelin? Rome had Petrolini, Naples had Totò, Trieste had Cecchelin, a famous comedian, brilliant and relentless creator of hilarious jokes. Caustic, cynical and popular in his mockery words towards the ruling class. Irredentist during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, irreverent antifascist he didn’t step back from mocking the communists and the yugoslavian during the “40 days”, much less from using his sharp irony on the allies while they were ruling the city. He paid the price with suspensions, warning letters, lawsuits, detentions, long periods in jail, forced to retire from the stage. He died in 1964 in Turin, far away from his Trieste.
