The devastating earthquake in Friuli in 1976 marked a moment of deep tragedy and renaissance for the region. The documentary “L’Orculat” follows the memories and the stories of those who lived those times and it recalls a trauma and its overcoming, through reality, dreams and hopes for the future, a sort of ideal bridge with our times. Myth and reality are intertwined in the narration, it explores seismic theories and the Orculat legend, a mythological creature studied by the film and compared to other imaginary creatures like the Riba Faronika. The documentary, of which narration’s is entrusted to the great Bruno Pizzul, features touching testimonies of local people and interviews with famous personalities such as Esther Kinsky, Fabio Capello, Dino Zoff, Simone Cristicchi, Claudio Magris, Paolo Rumiz, Giuseppe Battiston, Michael Caine and Glauco Venier, it offers a variety of perspectives on the tragedy and the following reconstruction, it gives a unique insight into the personal experiences during and after the earthquake as well as thoughts on resilience and historical memory.
